Interviews: Articles and Tips to Help You
”I am really smart — I just don't talk like it“
Communication — Problems & Solutions:
In our age of electronic discourse, honing your speaking skills
with a “buddy” or group can give you a strong advantage...
In todays world of texting, Facebooking, instant messaging, and the quick Tweet, it can be easy to forget the importance of real face-to-face communication. The type of communication you will be having in an interview situtaion for example.
Just because you are graduating does not mean you wont need all those English skills you learned. To be a more polished verbal communicator and ace those interviews try applying these 5 tips:
- Sign up for Word of the Day e-mails from a site such as Dictionary.com.
- Gain confidence and have fun with friends by participating in a local karaoke contest, open mic night, or poetry reading.
- Look for a local professional networking group that helps you learn public speaking such as Toast Masters.
- Pick good literature and read it aloud to get the cadence and tone of the words. This can also be a great group activity and gets extra points for helping you learn new information too!
- Have a “communication buddy” that is kind but truthful. Focus on key areas (such as saying “like” or “um” too often) and remind each other of good habits when you are having conversation together.
Being an effective verbal communicator will help you demonstrate to the interviewer all you can offer to the company and help you land the job!
