Have you blasted everyone you know (and some people you knew at one time, but dont really remember) with a generic e-mail begging for a job. Youre networking, right? An emphatic NO!
Networking has gotten a bad rap across many industries just because of tactics like this. Some people view networking as a scam to manipulate people - an underhanded way to get help. Thankfully, true networking could not be more different than the exploitative picture mentioned above.
So, what is networking? An apt analogy may be a spider web. It is sticky because each fiber is made of superior quality. It holds itself together, and the more strings connected the stronger the whole. One single strand will not be able to catch a fly, but when all the strands are connected the spider is able to be fed. This allows the spider to spin even more of its web and the process continues.
Basically, networking is about building relationships - quality relationships. Help others get to know you and what your goals and gifts are. Also, hone your listening skills and learn what others have to offer.
These concepts are not new, just under-practiced. Especially in the current economy it can be so tempting to try to grab as much as you can for yourself before someone else does. The key to there being enough for everyone is for everyone to contribute and share rather than only protecting selfish interests. What he shares about listening, creating win-win solutions, and synergizing with others will take your networking to whole new levels.
